The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
